Bayonetta & Vanquish 10th Anniversary - Review of PlatinumGames titles

PlatinumGames it has always been synonymous with quality, and it is no coincidence that every time a production has its name behind it, it struggles to stay out of the spotlight. In addition to the new ads that we will discover during 2020, the year of the silver star has reserved for us the return of two essential classics this February 18, which after their great success on the consoles of the past generation arrive on the occasion of the tenth anniversary on - just for a little while - current gen. We are obviously talking about Vanquish e Bayonetta, titles that we will analyze below in their versions for PS4.

This re-release is nothing more than a re-release, it does not change what we have seen with the two titles, and no particular contents have been included. This makes this brace take on what is now the classic double value: on the one hand the possibility for someone to get their hands on beloved games, on the other hand that of offering important titles to the new generation that has not had the opportunity to savor them at the their original output.

The Witch and the Armor

Before analyzing the mere technical aspect, that is what interests us most given the null variations on the level of the games themselves, let's go and give a little floured on what these now historic titles are. In Bayonetta we will take control of the Witch of the same name, who after having attracted angels to earth and slaughtered them, intends to dedicate herself to more demanding challenges. However, the journey she will undertake will put her in front of her past, her memories - currently lost - and even her family. The gameplay is a riot of very powerful punches and kicks (and angelic weapons ...), assisted by the support of the inseparable firearms (present on all four limbs) and by the incredible powers of the sexy witch. With a mix of attacks, dodges, perfect dodges and time slowing, the gameplay created by the Platinum has been for a long time unrivaled in the field of third-person action, creating a balance that is nothing short of majestic (detaching even the much more famous Devil May Cry). Japanese fan service and special moves bordering on sadism? Both present.Bayonetta & Vanquish 10th Anniversary - Review of PlatinumGames titles

With Vanquish instead we change - even if in a certain sense only partially - genre: pad in hand, we will check Sam Gideon, a member of DARPA equipped with extremely technological armor capable of giving him very fast movements and a truly impressive arsenal of weapons. Taking advantage of this miracle of mechanics, Sam can whiz between enemies and defeat them, also making use of particular abilities as a sort of "slowdown". Shinji Mikami is just one of the names behind the title, which guaranteed a very 90 'and 00' style narrative. Sam's task will be that, flanked by the Marines, to save his DARPA leader and the inventor of this armor. As usual, time is running out, and the threat of a new attack by the Russians is becoming more and more concrete ... A frenetic shooter, with an intelligent cover system and a truly adrenaline-pumping "Slide and Shoot" feature, so much so that some dynamics they are reminiscent of the hack 'n' slash genre. Keyword? Sublime exaggeration.

Still them

In technical terms, both titles are ports of the PC version although they differ in a couple of issues: the work of Armature played on Bayonetta was very good, with the quality we found on PS4 alongside what you could test playing on PC at maximum quality, with 60 frames, 1080p, upscaled. Fluid and dynamic, with an extra burst of power, it has aged very well. Vanquish however, even if it also uses the aforementioned 60fps and 1080p and with the upscaling on PS4 Pro, it returns a strange feedback, as if "it was not at maximum quality": an example of all is the rendering of shadows, which among all the rest do not stand out as they should. Finally, in both cases there were no lag problems.

Beyond the improved quality and the reference platform, however, as already mentioned there are not many differences that you will notice when picking up the pad, but we can ensure that the general feeling is pleasant. The price of this revival on release date is average, and while it may be attractive to say the least for new players, some of those who have already made the most of the titles in the past may not even be tempted (nothing that has to do with quality, mind you).
