Avengers: Endgame is an all-time box office record from week one

“The universe belongs to Marvel,” TIME tells its readers; and how to blame him, in fact. Avengers: Endgame was released in theaters last year 24th April, but the film dedicated to the most beloved superheroes of all time is fiercely treading the international scene because of its record takings.

Overcoming the box office results obtained last year Avengers: Infinity War, the latest chapter of the Avengers has already earned well 1.2 billion dollars after only the first weekend of programming, of which 358 million from the United States (in which there were 157.6 million collected on Friday, 109 million on Saturday and another 84 million on Sunday) and 859 million from all other international markets.

It is an incredible result, a result that marks a new absolute record in the entire history of cinema. Doubling the revenues of Avengers: Infinity War in just five days (which last year reached 257 million in America and 640 million in the rest of the world), the latest effort by the brothers Russian could seriously reach total takings of Avatar, which with its well-deserved 2.787 billion dollars currently holds the title of most profitable film in the history of cinema.

But this grandiose achievement also represents another important one success for the world made of celluloid: in a present where thecinema industry remains petrified in front of the uncertainty and the strong pressure of the well-known streaming services, this weekend studded with dizzying figures remains an absolute triumph especially for the more traditional cinema in general, presenting itself as “the biggest weekend in popcorn history”. That weekend when an unexpected wave of people, including friends, families and die-hard fans, decided to spend time together by simply going to the cinema.

John Fithian, president of the American National Association of Theater Owners, defined this viral Avengers phenomenon as "the most significant moment in the modern history of cinema", a memorable event in which theaters in Canada and the United States are even "forced" to add more and more shows to face the incessant flow of spectators, eager to enjoy the experience of the last chapter of the saga sitting on an old and dear red armchair.
