Android 12: Google releases the Developer Preview 2 with several new features

A little over a month after the arrival of the first Developer Preview, Google has released in the past few hours the second beta of the new version of its mobile operating system, currently reserved for developers and testers. If with the DP 1 we had the opportunity to take a look at what will be the new graphic interface of the green robot, the second offers us the opportunity to try some of the functions that will almost certainly be part of Android 12. Available via OTA update (over-the air) downloadable directly from the smartphone or installed via factory image, the DP 2 of Android 12 introduces several really interesting innovations.

First, we find a very clever implementation of the functionality PiP (Picture in Picture), or the one that allows us to watch video content even outside the app from which we started playback. In Android 12 the transition will be smoother than in previous versions of the operating system and the video will be shown automatically on the other screens, as soon as we exit the application that is playing it. It will also be possible to resize the window with appropriate gesture. The API called CompanionDeviceService was also introduced, which has the task of improving the efficiency of applications that manage other devices such as, for example, fitness trackers and SmartWatch.

In addition, some refinements have been made to theinterface of  work. There is now a dark theme for the UI, the list of widget and, importantly, the mode that facilitates use with one hand has been made operational. Google is continuously improving and updating the new version of Android so, as anticipated last time, some of the features seen in the Developer Preview may not be included in the stable version of the software. Pending the arrival of the next beta, we remind you that the DP versions of Android 12 are downloadable by all those who have a Google Pixel, from model 3 to 5.
